Block your knits like a Pro
Everything you need to know to create professionally finished knitwear by blocking & finishing
A lot of people will tell you that the difference between well made knitwear and beautifully made knitwear is in the finishing. And I couldn’t agree more. The trouble is that, more often that not, nobody ever tells you what this involves or how to do it! I always used to think that knitting a garment was the easy bit compared to the mind blowing complications of joining edges, grafting, mattress stitches, and BLOCKING. All of this is often resigned to a final sentence at the end of a pattern - and hence quite often overlooked!
In this quick and easy mini-workshop you will learn everything you need to know to block like a pro. We will cover
- What equipment you will need (essential + upgrades/nice to haves)
- What is meant by the term blocking
- Preparing your knitting (including washing)
- Step-by-step instructions and a video showing you exactly how to block
- Final finishing to complete your professional looking garment
At the end of the course you will know how to give all your knitting the perfect finish and will be amazed what a difference it can make! Take your knitwear to the next level with professional blocking.

Your Instructor
I’m Nic Corrigan, owner, designer and maker behind Whitehall Studio - a luxury knitwear brand based in West Yorkshire, England.
I studied Fashion Design at University and during my placement year I was gifted a 2nd hand knitting machine. This opened up a whole new world to me and I ended up using it to produce my final collection. It was a fine gauge Knitmaster machine and I still use it to this day!
After graduating with a first class degree, and several years working in industry as a Knitwear Designer, I had grown disillusioned with the fast fashion industry. I felt so far removed from the creative process I had learnt at University and I was looking for the creativity I had enjoyed in the studio there. In 2014, I decided to take the plunge and launch my own label.
As well as designing, making and selling my own range of garments I also love to help people master their knitting machines. I want to pass on my passion for machine knitting and make it accessible to all!
I have been teaching in-person classes for many years now and will continue to do this. But my studio is in a picturesque hilltop village in Yorkshire which isn't convenient for everybody! And so in 2019, I started online classes and since then they have become more important and relevant than ever. My online courses are designed in a very straightforward, logical manner that takes you through every stage of the process step-by-step. It makes it really clear and simple so you can pick it up again easily wherever you break off and you can make solid progress with as little as 30 minutes a week. If you can devote more time, it's easily achievable to complete a garment within a week.
This also led me to launch the online Machine Knit Community in 2020. This is a private space for machine knitters to connect, inspire and learn together. From all the people I taught, I discovered that one of the main reasons they want to learn is so that they can make beautiful pieces of knitwear for themselves, and their friends and family to wear. They struggle to find modern, wearable designs but almost as importantly they all struggle to find the time to sit down at their machine. The MKC helps with all of that with live classes from leading MK designers, self paced workshops and KALs and talks and presentations from people working in machine knitting now. Think of it like a Facebook group but without the ads, algorithms and distractions. Just Machine Knitting! We now have over 700 members from across the globe supporting each other on their machine knitting journeys.
